By now you’ve heard the news. You may have even seen the reports. Actually, there is no maybe about it…you saw them. “Hard Times and Big Trouble at Grambling State University” was the reoccurring theme. The New York Times, ESPN and USA Today (along with other popular media outlets) jumped at the chance to report what we all hoped to be false, the legendary football team was on strike. Underneath the frustration of the players and Administration, the University’s financial woes were also revealed.

Muscle Milk was the first to respond. They donated 384 cases. That’s 4,608 bottles. Divide that by 80 players and you’re looking at 56.7 bottles per player. Divide that number with the remaining number of weeks (at the time) left in the season and 11 bottles of Muscle Milk would be available per player.

Fast forward two weeks and it’s Grambling’s Homecoming. The G-Men have ended their boycott and are looking to clinch their first win of the season against the Mississippi Valley Delta Devils. Grammy nominated Rapper, Wale is in town to perform at the University’s concert. While on stage, Wale announced that he and his management team would be sending a check to the school for new uniforms and equipment. Reports later revealed that he donated $5,000 to the entire athletic program. Talk about coming at the perfect time!

The DMV native is no stranger to supporting HBCU’s (although he didn’t graduate, he attended both Bowie State and Virginia State on football scholarships). Earlier this year he helped a struggling Hampton University student who was considering leaving school due to rising tuition costs, with a $25,000 scholarship. Kudos to Wale for being a celebrity who gives back!
