Recently I had the opportunity to chat with the beautiful LeToya Luckett. We’re all familiar with her music career in Destiny’s Child to her 2009 collection, Lady Love, which debuted as the #1 album on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart and featured the Top 10 single “Regret” with Ludacris. Now she’s giving us life with this totally new level of talent…and we’re loving it!

LeToya’s film career includes a starring role in PREACHER’S KID, and a supporting role in the romantic comedy KILLERS, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. She’s also enjoyed a recurring role on the HBO TV series ‘TREME from 2011-2012. Letoya made her foray into television as the host of BET Centric’s show CULTURELIST, along with a role as Felicia on VH1’s hit series SINGLE LADIES, which she totally smashed!

Letoya from the rough

Let’s fast forward to today…Ms. Luckett’s new film FROM THE ROUGH opens in theaters today! FROM THE ROUGH is based on the inspiring true story of Tennessee State University coach Catana Starks (played by Taraji P. Henson) and her seemingly insurmountable journey to inspire a team of young athletes deeply enough for them to believe in themselves and become champions – in their own lives. Letoya plays the role of Stacy, a student athlete coached by Taraji’s character.

From the moment she answered the phone with the coolest, “Hey Kim!”, I knew this was going to be like a fun conversation between BFF’s. We talked about her role in ‘From The Rough’, ‘Single Ladies’, maintaining a God-centered lifestyle in the entertainment industry, HBCU’s, transitioning from singing to acting, her ideal man and her new upcoming album, titled “Until Then,” debuting nationwide in 2014.

A few qualities she looks for in a man:

“I need a man who can PRAY for me!”

Her experience with being a believer in the industry:

It’s been easy for me, but sometimes it can be tough. The industry sometimes want you to do things that go against what you believe…but I’ve been one to stick to my guns. If the character doesn’t learn the lesson by the end, I’m not doing it. If you step out of the box just a little, it’s mainly believers who can be judgmental. Honey, they will come for you!

Advice to believers who want to enter the entertainment industry:

If you don’t do anything else, stay on your face! Keep your communication with God.
