In May DeVon Franklin had the honor of speaking at a TEDx event at the Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, CA. The theme of the event was “Infinite Possibilities.”
DeVon pointed out that even though these individuals where physically bound in prisons, many of us bind ourselves within the chains of our past, our struggles, failures, and so on. It doesn’t matter if we are physically confined or if we are hanging on to the chains of our past, they DO NOT DEFINE YOU! I love how they described this event at Ironwood:
The most effective way to end mass incarceration in this country is to begin mass education in our communities, as well as in our prisons. Even though we may be confined in prison, we are not confined in our dreams and aspirations. And the moment that we realized each of us has the power to actively shape our conditions, instead of being shaped by them, a world of infinite possibilities emerged…hence our guiding principle and theme.
