Two weeks after the release of his feature film ADDICTED, acclaimed director BILLE WOODRUFF returns to television tonight with the Vh1 premiere of his latest project – Drumline: A New Beat.

Produced by Nick Cannon, Drumline: A New Beat is the sequel to the classic and hugely popular 2002 motion picture Drumline, starring Cannon. Drumline: A New Beat stars a new cast of rising talent, including Alexandra Shipp, Letoya Luckett, Jordan Calloway, Jeff Pierre, Jasmine Burke and Leonard Roberts.

After seeing the film this past weekend at the BronzeLens Film Festival, I can definitely say it’s very “2014”. The director infused the culture of technology as well as dealt with issues of homosexuality in ways we would not have seen during the time of when the first Drumline was released. Heads up, if you have children you don’t want exposed to the lifestyle, I’d suggest you keep them close and cover their eyes for a few small scenes.

On a brighter note, I’d say the breakout star in Drumline 2 is Jasmine Burke. She plays Tasha, a quick witted freshman with gorgeous braids who turns out to be a genius. Her character steals the scene every time!

Hopefully the return of Drumline will put HBCU’s and academia back in the spotlight for young adults. For so long, nothing regarding higher education has been marketed to our culture like in the 90’s when you would always see an HBCU shirt worn by the likes of TLC, Will Smith, Russell Simmons, Bill Cosby and more in their videos and TV shows. What’s also great is that VH1 has partnered with the UNCF. Each time you post a pic on instagram or twitter with the hashtag #PassTheBaton, VH1 will donate $1 to the UNCF for scholarships. So get your phones out now and post!!

Be sure to catch DRUMLINE: A NEW BEAT TONIGHT on VH1 at 9/8C!!!
