Over the weekend, we were invited to Just Us Girls, Inc. (JustUsGirlsMP.org), Inaugural Butterfly Gala. Just Us Girls is a Georgia nonprofit organization for girls in 6th to 12th grade. Their goal is to give girls the tools to make positive life choices and a sense of their own personal power. The organization helps girls live healthier more productive lives, promotes community responsibility, and encourages alternatives to drugs, alcohol and early sexual activity.
The event was emceed by National Al Jazeera Correspondent Jonathan Martin, with keynote speaker Eve Nimkar of Delta Community Credit Union Philanthropic Fund. Guests enjoyed a delectable lunch, live entertainment and live auction.
“The funds raised from the Butterfly Gala are vital in ensuring that we give the girls we the tools to make positive life choices, unleash their own personal power, gain wisdom about character, academics and life skills that will put them on a path to soar in all areas of life,” says Tammie Jenkins, Just Us Girls Board Chairwoman.
This event also served as an opportunity to honor inspirational individuals and sponsors who have served as partners in the community. This year’s honorees have shared their time, talent and treasure to ensure that the life of each girl in Just Us Girls is set on a path for excellence.
Inaugural Honorees were:

Although Janelle was not able to attend, she sent an empowering acceptance speech via video. In the video she expressed how she wanted to be in attendance, but is proud to have had hands on experience with mentoring the girls. Janelle also sent Alexis and Isis from her new group on Wondaland Records, St. Beauty, to accept the award on her behalf. Listen to our interview with them below.
Just Us Girls founder Jackie Martin does everything from buying prom dresses for the girls to driving them to college.
“I started Just Us Girls, Inc because I was once broken. I made great grades but still never felt good about myself. Power comes from your soul. It’s about feeling good about who you are. I’m thankful for Janelle Monae supporting us and being there for the girls.”
The fund-raiser gala was filled with hope for giving our girls the tools the need to grow to become strong women. Check out the pics and pledge below.
